Breathwork for Constipation: Effective Techniques for Digestive Relief
Constipation is something that happens to everyone every now and again. It doesn’t matter how much fiber you try to eat or physical activity you do, sometimes we just can’t seem to go!
While this issue isn’t something we can usually chat about casually with friends or acquaintances, everyone experiences the occasional, or sometimes not so occasional, bout of constipation. But before you go reaching for the over the counter remedy, what if I told you there was a simpler way of dealing with constipation using something that you’re doing right now.
That’s right! Breathwork can be used to help relieve constipation.
But how can breathing affect my bowels? While it seems these two things are completely unrelated, how you. breath deeply affects your internal organs, especially those in your stomach.
Today, many people are breathing too shallowly, not fully expanding the lungs and diaphragm. This doesn’t create a lot of additional movement in the stomach region. But, when we breathe deeply using yogic breaths, we are pushing our entire abdomen down and out, creating lots of additional movement that can help move things along internally.
Here is a simple yet effective breathwork exercise that can help relieve constipation.
Breathwork Technique For Constipation Relief
Before you begin this breathwork exercise, it’s important that you haven’t just eaten a large meal. You want to ensure that your stomach is relatively empty as this technique may interfere with your gut. You also want to ensure that you have a toilet nearby for when you achieve the desired results.
Constipation is best prevented by eating enough fiber and drinking enough water, however, sometimes these precursors aren’t enough to combat constipation. Luckily, this breathing technique is simple and quick.
Begin sitting upright with a straight spine to allow proper airflow during the breathwork session. Wearing loose clothing that won’t restrict or push on your belly is another great option.
When you are ready to begin, take a deep breath in through your nose and then exhale through your nose. Once you have let all the air from your lungs, hold your nose closed and hold your breath until you start to feel flushed and that air hunger. Once you get there, inhale and exhale before holding your nose and breath again repeating the same exercise 3-5 times.
After 3-5 rounds of the breathwork exercise, breathe normally for a few minutes. If the breathwork technique didn’t work, try a few more rounds until you reach the desired result.
How Does Breathwork Help Constipation
Before completing the breathwork exercise for constipation, you may be wondering how it helps. After you’ve completed a round, you’ll physically understand the feeling that breathholds have on your stomach and bowels. These breaths simulate peristaltic motion, physically moving the waste through your bowels.
This breathwork technique also drastically increases the amount of carbon dioxide and nitric oxide in your blood. These gasses help dilate blood vessels, allowing more blood to flow to your bowels.
